Thai Taxi Drivers - Tips for How to Stay Alive When a Taxi Ride Goes Bad...

Last night right as we were climbing in bed, wife gets a call on the batphone. A foreign girl is at the beach arguing with a Thai taxi driver about the fare. The male Thai taxi driver punched her in the stomach, and pushed her backwards - attempting to intimidate her into paying the money he wanted.

So, my wife works with this girl and went to try to help straighten it out.

Getting a taxi in Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, etc.) is easy. Agreeing to a fare, if off the meter, is easy most times. Sometimes there is a misunderstanding, or a calculated attempt at trickery, and it goes bad. When this happens, and it's somewhat often, you must be prepared for it, and give in. Seriously, that's my advice. You're not in the USA anymore. You're not in the UK or Australia, Germany, Sweden, France, or anywhere else. In Thailand, the taxi guys are known to be ruthless if you don't give up the fare they believe is fair.

Foreigners are cut down in the street with machetes in some cases. That's not a confabulation. It happens. Happened. Taxi scams are frequent in the tourist cities of Bangkok and Phuket, Samui.

Don't let your Thailand Travel be Ruined.

Always be ready for the deal to go sour. ALWAYS. That way, you're not emotional if it does. You can think rationally... like, "Hmm, this dork wants to charge me twice what we agreed to. I stand to lose $3 here. I could fight him and hope he doesn't have a weapon, and then I could fight all his friends too. Or, I can give him the $3 and go tell the tourist police."

What's the right thing to do to stay alive?

Right. It's simple when you're not emotionally out of your mind because someone is about to cheat you.

Pay the money, live another day.

Report the guy to the tourist police... often times, something is done about it. At the very least, the taxi guy loses face because now he's explaining to the police why he's wasting everyone's time by trying to rip off tourists.
