In this video John reviews the Mammut Ridge Low GTX Approach Shoe.

Following the day filming with John I actually decided to purchase a pair, and so far I have been very impressed. In an approach shoe I look for something that is tough, water resistant, comfortable and supportive on the walk in, but also something that gives good feel on rock scrambles.

The Ridge Low was specifically designed for the Via Ferrata (iron road / way) that is hugely popular in Europe's high mountains. But for me, they are just an excellent approach shoe full stop. The sole unit is really good, it has a rigidity and support that is surprising in a shoe, and provides excellent traction on a range of different surfaces. The Ridge Low's Via Ferrata last is comfortable on the walk in, but also allows great feel on rock. It's a good balance between comfort and performance.

The reversed leather uppers are very tough, and should stand up to masses of punishment, and the addition of memory foam in the heel is a nice touch that will mean they will break in really nicely, but to be honest, they have been very comfortable right from the start.

In conclusion, I would say, don't be put off by the Via Ferrata tag. I have owned 7 pairs of approach shoes over the last 10 years, and these are the best.
