1. 15 fake GPS apps reportedly spotted on Google Play Store with over 50 million downloads -Google recently suspended around 85 adware apps from Play Store, downloaded around 9 million times. The search giant’s effort to hinder fraudulent apps seems to be not on the right track as 15 GPS and navigation apps have been found to be fake on its platform, illegally cloning Google Maps app. In addition, over 50 million users have downloaded the fake apps.
A malware researcher at ESET, named Lukas Stefanko has revealed that multiple fraudulent app developers use Google Maps to make money through embedded ads. In simpler terms, the moment you download a fake GPS and navigation app from the Play Store, and click on Drive, Navigate, Route, My Location or other option, you will be greeted to Google Maps with no additional value added to the fake app, excluding the advertisements, helping fraudsters make money for free. The apps also carry bogus app icon.


2. WhatsApp expands message forwarding limit globally, aims to fight fake news - WhatsApp announced that it is updating the forward limits for its users across the globe. According to the revised limits, any WhatsApp user can only forward a message to five contacts at any given time. This is a likely attempt to fight the problem of increasing fake news where people are sharing incorrect and false information with friends and family in their contact list. As part of the announcement, the company added that this will ensure that people use the platform primarily for private messaging between close friends.


3. Samsung Galaxy M20 real-life leaked image confirms dual-rear cameras, fingerprint sensor - Ahead of the official launch in India on January 28, an image of the anticipated Samsung Galaxy M20 has been leaked online. The alleged real-life image via Mysmartprice showcases the back of upcoming Galaxy M20 revealing a vertically aligned dual-rear camera setup and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The back design appears to be same glass-like finish seen on recently launched Galaxy J4+, J6+.
The new Galaxy M-series is anticipated to replace the existing Galaxy J-series and On-series smartphones. According to reports, Samsung will launch only two models – Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 – to start with. These will feature a fresh new design with the company’s latest Infinity-U displays.


4. Samsung to stop local production of Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 9 in India - Samsung India will reportedly stop local production of its flagship Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 smartphones. The company is looking to reduce mobile phone manufacturing because of government’s new ‘Phased Manufacturing Program’ (PMP).
Samsung Electronics has informed the government that it will be manufacturing lesser phones in India. The reason is suggested to be government’s Phased Manufacturing Program (PMP), ET reports. Reportedly, the government now wants companies to starting local manufacturing of components from February 2019, which was earlier decided as anytime in 2019-20. If not followed, manufactures will face 10 percent import duty on these parts, which with a surcharge would go up to 11 percent.


5. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7 Pro and Redmi Go India launch soon - Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 7 earlier this month in China. At the launch event, the Chinese company also announced that Redmi brand is now a separate entity. A fresh report now claims that Xiaomi‘s sub-brand will be taking wraps off three smartphones, including Redmi Note 7, Redmi Note 7 Pro and Redmi Go, in India before the end of the first quarter.
As for the specifications, we already know about the Redmi Note 7. It’s bigger sibling Redmi Note 7 Pro is expected to make its debut in China next month with a rumored price label of CNY 1,499 (approximately Rs 15,750), MySmartPrice reports. The device is expected to house a massive 48-megapixel rear Sony IMX586 sensor, instead of the Samsung ISOCELL GM1 sensor. As this is a ‘Pro’ version of the Redmi Note 7, it is expected to offer better in terms of performance. It could be built around an 11nm Snapdragon 675 octa-core chipset, coupled with an Adreno 612 GPU. Comparatively, the Redmi Note 7 offers a Snapdragon 660 SoC.
