Alan Shearer weighs in on Rio Ferdinand's bizarre Mike Ashley comments. Alan Shearer has handed a withering reply to Rio Ferdinand after the former Manchester United defender reiterated his defence of Newcastle owner Mike Ashley.
Ferdinand was widely condemned by fans for comments made relating to Magpies supporters' relationship with Ashley.
The former England player turned pundit gave his opinion during BT Sport's coverage of Newcastle's 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday evening.
Discussing Ashley's 11-year tenure as Newcastle chief, Ferdinand argued that fans should be grateful for the work the Sports Direct owner has done on Tyneside, citing his financial contribution after the club's 2016 relegation and influence over the appointment of manager Rafa Benitez.
Ferdinand said: "When they went down, he spent £50m of his own money to get them up. Thank you, that should be. By the way, please say thank you for getting Rafa Benítez in. They're lucky to have him.
“They should say thank you to Ashley. You look at Sunderland, they had £1.2million to go up from the Championship. And they owe a thank you to Mike Ashley for getting Rafa Benitez.”
But fans were quick to call Ferdinand out on his inaccuracies.
According to club accounts, Newcastle made £80million in transfer fees during their relegation season, and it has been widely reported that Benitez himself approached the club about the vacant manager's job after Steve McClaren was sacked in March of that season.
And Ferdinand has since hit back, tweeting: "NUFC fans good morning to you all!! Ya club's turning a profit, no debt, oh & playing in the PL! Terrible!" - that was enough to draw Newcastle legend Shearer into the debate.
The Premier League's all-time top scorer tweeted: "The last club accounts tell you they are over £140 million in debt!!"
Newcastle have twice been relegated under Ashley's tenure, and relations with fans have been at breaking point for years.
Tensions have been frayed by the owner's lack of investment in the playing staff, bizarre and unpopular managerial appointments and more recently a reluctance to give his full backing to Benitez, who many fans believe is the club's only redeeming asset.
Ashley has publicly made clear his wish to sell the club, with former Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon the front runner to end the protracted ownership stand-off.
